In the United States, whether you need to charge sales tax on tickets and refund protection depends on the state where your event takes place.

We worked with BDO USA to summarise our understanding of how States in the USA treat tickets and Refund Protection in regards to sales tax.

Tax differs by state due to states defining what they tax differently, and they draw the line in different places between (1) the taxable ā€œadmissionā€ itself and (2) optional add-ons like refund protection.

Please note, whether you need to pay sales tax at all will be dependent on the size of your business and if you reach economic nexus in the given State. Local sales tax rates and regulations may apply.
