You might notice sales tax on your invoice if your organisation is based in certain US states.
This article explains why you may see it, which customers are affected, and what to do if you’re tax exempt.
Why am I being charged sales tax?
In the US, businesses must collect sales tax when they reach a certain level of activity in a state. This is called sales tax nexus. Once we cross a state’s threshold, we’re legally required to charge sales tax on our subscription fees for customers located there.
Which US states are charged sales tax on our fees?
We collect sales tax in the following jurisdictions:
District of Columbia (effective Dec 1st 2025)
Hawaii (effective Dec 1st 2025)
Kentucky (effective Dec 1st 2025)
Maryland (effective Dec 1st 2025)
Ohio (effective Dec 1st 2025)
Tennessee (effective Apr 1st 2026)
Utah (effective Dec 1st 2025)
Vermont (effective Aug 1st 2026)
If your billing address is in one of these states (this is the address you added to your account when you created your box office), sales tax will be added to your subscription invoices unless you inform us of your exemption status (see below).
We’ll continue to monitor our activity in other states and will notify affected customers if more states are added in the future.
How do I know if sales tax applies to me?
In most cases, sales tax is based on the billing address you have on your Ticket Tailor account.
If your billing address is in one of the states listed above, then sales tax will apply, unless you are tax-exempt (see below). If you’re unsure whether your billing details are up to date, or if you believe the tax has been applied incorrectly, please get in touch and we’ll happily take a look.
I’m a tax-exempt organisation, what should I do?
If your organisation qualifies for tax-exempt status, you won’t need to pay sales tax, but we do need a valid exemption certificate on file before we can remove it.
Just send us a copy of your state-approved exemption certificate (PDF or image is fine) to hi@tickettailor.com and we’ll get it reviewed.
Once everything is validated, we’ll update your account so that future invoices don’t include sales tax.
What tax rate will I be charged?
Sales tax rates vary quite a bit depending on the state, and in some cases, even the city or local jurisdiction. We recommend consulting your local tax department to understand more. Our billing system automatically applies the correct rate based on your billing address, and you’ll always be able to see the rate clearly on your invoices.
You’ll always see the tax rate clearly displayed on your invoice. If you’d like us to double-check something for you, just let us know and we’ll be happy to help.
